The most important festival is the Chinese New year when the whole of Hong Kong is lulled in the festive mood. Parades and lion or dragon dances which are considered to bring good luck fill the pathways with gaiety.

Another equally famous among the festivals in Hong Kong is the Spring Lantern Festival which is also known as Chinese Valentine's Day. This unique festival is celebrated on the 15th day of Lunar New Year and during this time houses, markets, hotels, restaurants and parks are adorned with colorful lanterns in conventional designs. The buildings look even more dazzling and temples are thronged by the worshippers.

Yet another very important festival is the Ching Ming Festival also known by several names like Spring Remembrance, Grave Sweeping and Remembrance of Ancestors Day. The Goddess of the Sea, Tin Hau, is highly revered by the people of Hong Kong and the Birthday of Tin Hau is celebrated with a reason. The reason behind is to bring prosperity in the lives of those who jeopardize their lives by venturing into sea to earn livelihood for their families. There are many Buddhists in Hong Kong and the birthday of Lord Buddha is celebrated in Hong Kong with unfathomable devotion.

Other important festivals of Hong Kong include Dragon Boat, Tuen Ng Festival which is also known as the race of fierce dragon boats; Maidens Festival or Seven Sisters Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Winter Solstice or Dong Zhi, celebrated on the longest night of the year and is especially popular for its fanfare.
